Samsung Galaxy S10 Tipped To Support WiFi 6

Recent reports claim Samsung’s forthcoming Galaxy S10 smartphone will support the new WiFi 6 standard [802.11ax], prompting speculation the device may help trigger sales of compatible routers.

CES 2019 saw the unveiling of several Wi-Fi 6 capable routers, including an Orbi mesh system from Netgear.

As previously reported, WiFi 6 capable devices are tipped to be a big winner for local retailers, despite the fact the next generation technology may not roll-out in Australia for some time.

According to Business Insider, Samsung’s Galaxy S10 will reportedly support WiFi 6, which claims to be four to ten times faster than the current standard.

Customers are not likely to notice radical speed benefits without a compatible ultra fast internet plan – e.g. over 1,000Mbps.

Other WiFi 6 benefits will reportedly include battery life improvements – a notable plus for smartphones.

Despite this, WiFi 6 does claim to offer somewhat stronger and faster signals on lower speed plans. The new standard is developed to be more efficient with how data fits into 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands – faster speeds courtesy of more data.

Routers and devices which support WiFi 6 are set to continue using today’s “2.4 GHz” and “5 GHz” bands, however, speeds will be faster on each band.

WiFi 6 is also tipped to improve internet speed and performance in heavily congested areas (e.g. airports).

If preliminary reports prove true, Samsung Galaxy S10 users could generally access better WiFi speeds across longer distances.

Whilst it’s still a while before WiFi 6 permeates the mass consumer market, the reports are an indication of what’s to come in the 5G mobile era.
