Philips To Make Premium TV Comeback In 2023, With Samsung QD OLED TV

Philips TVs could return to the premium TV market in Australia next year, via a new distribution arrangement and among the model line-up could be a TV using Samsung’s QD-OLED panels.

Philips TVs are manufactured by TP Vision which is a wholly owned company of TPV Technology Limited, (‘TPV’), which is one of the world’s leading monitor and TV manufacturers.

In Australia Philips TV’s have been sold by Tempo and direct via a subsidiary that was set up locally but failed to convince retailers to sell their premium TV’s which are extremely popular in Europe.

Observers believe that if TP Vision can iron out a local deal and get their pricing right, they will be a serious threat to Chinese brands such as Hisense and TCL.

ChannelNews understands that TP Vision management are in discussions with Samsung about the prospect of using Samsung QD-OLED panels.

The South Korean TV Company developed the panel in an effort to take advantage of the contrast of OLED with the greater colour vibrancy and brightness potential of Quantum Dots. Currently Sony and Samsung are selling these panels.

According to media reports in Europe Danny Tack, director of product strategy and planning at TP Vision in Europe, confirmed the move to a Samsung OLED panel.

“We are also exploring the quantum dot OLED panel from Samsung,” he told HDTV Test.

“We also have prototypes in-house in Ghent in our innovation centre and we are comparing both with each other looking through strengths and weaknesses”.

A decision on whether to launch Philips QD-OLED TVs would be made later, he added. Philips plans to unveil its 2023 TV line-up in February.
