Phablets To Dominate In Market Share, Says Strategy Analytics

Bigger-screen smartphones with over 5.5 inch sized displays are expected to take 34% share of all smartphones sold this year, according to a new report from Strategy Analytics.

The firm says this slice will grow to 47% and 52% by 2020 and 2022 respectively.

“The richer and more comfortable contents (video / education / navigation / game / etc) experience, users’ consistent preference for bigger display with comfortable grip feeling and the new shift towards bezeless and full display concept, pioneered by leading vendors such as Samsung, Apple, LG, Xiaomi and others will contribute to stronger market share of over 5.5 inch in the next several years,” Strategy Analytics say.

They estimate that global smartphone sales will grow 7% in 2017, with the combined market share of “Standard Phablets” (5.0 to 5.99-inch) and “Super Phablets” (6.0 to 6.99-inch) projected to account for a 63% share of the market.

These numbers come at a time when larger-sized handsets are becoming a major part of the product roadmap for smartphone vendors.

Samsung, the forerunner for the phablet market, is set to launch their flagship phablet – the Galaxy Note 8 – next month. Meanwhile, Google is set to embolden their own phablet offering with a new ‘Pixel XXL‘. Even LG is making more of a play for the phablet market with their LG G6 Plus.
