Panasonic’s $1.2 billion Projector Business Sale to Orix Falls Through
A major deal between Panasonic Holdings and Japanese financial giant Orix to offload Panasonic’s commercial projector business has collapsed, with the two sides failing to agree on key terms.
As reported by Nikkei Asia, the agreement would have seen Orix acquire an 80% stake in a new company, Panasonic Projector & Display, valued at 118.5 billion yen (A$1.2 billion).
The deal was part of Panasonic’s broader restructuring strategy to focus on growth sectors like supply chain management, following its 2021 acquisition of US-based Blue Yonder.
Panasonic had spun off its projector division in April 2025, positioning the business for external investment. But sources say disagreements over growth forecasts and other financial projections caused talks to break down.
With no deal in place, the business will now aim to grow independently.

Panasonic’s large-venue commercial projectors are a global leader in the sector, used prominently at events such as the Olympics.
The division posted revenue of approximately 60 billion yen (A$610 million) in FY2024, with 80% of sales generated outside Japan.
This is the latest in a string of divestments by Panasonic. In December, the company sold its automotive systems business to Apollo Global Management. In May it announced plans to slash 10,000 jobs globally.
