Oppo has revealed new details about its upcoming Find X9 Ultra, confirming a major camera upgrade just a day after teasing the device’s April launch and global ambitions.

As reported yesterday, Oppo is positioning the Find X9 Ultra as a “camera-first” flagship, with a simultaneous global release marking a shift from its usual China-first rollout.

Now, the company has followed up with specifics on what could be its most significant imaging leap yet: a native 10x optical zoom system built directly into the handset.

The new telephoto setup, co-developed with Hasselblad, is being described by Oppo as equivalent to “putting a teleconverter inside a smartphone”, but without the need for external attachments.

On paper, the system supports true 10x optical zoom, 20x “optical quality” zoom and up to 120x digital zoom. Oppo claims this is the first time a genuine 10x optical system has been integrated into a thin, flagship smartphone form factor.

To achieve this, the company has developed a new periscope module using a five-reflection optical path, allowing for a long focal length – up to 460mm equivalent – while keeping the device relatively slim.

Oppo says it has also refined prism manufacturing at a nanometre scale to reduce light distortion and improve clarity.

Manufacturing processes such as Active Optical Alignment (AOA) and multi-stage calibration are being used to ensure consistency across units, addressing a common issue in complex smartphone camera systems.

The zoom hardware is paired with a custom 50MP sensor and Oppo’s LUMO imaging engine, which aims to improve detail, colour accuracy and dynamic range at long distances.

Early sample images released by Oppo suggest the system could rival, or at least challenge, existing solutions from competitors like Samsung’s Galaxy S Ultra series, which have traditionally led in long-range zoom.

The move also signals Oppo’s intent to remove the need for external lens accessories, like the Hasselblad Professional Imaging Kit, which have gained traction but remain niche due to added bulk and inconvenience.

The Find X9 Ultra is expected to launch globally in April, with Australian availability still unconfirmed.
