Netflix Finally Cracks Down On Password Sharing
Guess what: Netflix knows you share your password. It’s actually part of its growth strategy, to spread to as many homes as possible and become a feature that’s impossible to live without.
But after years of allowing this, Netflix is finally cracking the whip and pushing those accounts with multiple users to “do so “easily and securely, while also paying a bit more.”
Chengyi Long, director of product innovation at Netflix, explained in a polite blog post:
“We’ve always made it easy for people who live together to share their Netflix account, with features like separate profiles and multiple streams in our Standard and Premium plans. While these have been hugely popular, they have also created some confusion about when and how Netflix can be shared. As a result, accounts are being shared between households – impacting our ability to invest in great new TV and films for our members.”
Netflix will now charge “sub accounts”, for up to two people that don’t live in the main subscribers’ home, for an extra fee. They are rolling it out in Chile, Costa Rica, and Peru, as a test market, before extending it globally.
But only if it works.
” We’ll be working to understand the utility of these two features for members in these three countries before making changes anywhere else in the world,” Long notes.
