Netflix Partners With Sennheiser To Add Spatial Audio
Netflix has added spatial audio to more than 700 titles, as part of a boost to its Premium plan.
The streaming company has partnered with Sennheiser to bring AMBEO 2-Channel Spatial Audio technology to any Premium streamer using stereo speakers.
Unlike the similarly immersive Dolby Atmos, spatial audio doesn’t require any special gear other than a pair of stereo speakers, or headphones. The feature is available from today on popular titles, including Stranger Things, The Watcher, Wednesday, and Knives Out: Glass Onion.
“As a brand-new feature, the AMBEO 2-Channel Spatial Audio renderer is now also able to process surround mixes, unlocking huge catalogues of content available in these formats,” explains Renato Pellegrini, Manager Pro Labs, AMBEO Immersive Audio.
“We are very pleased that Netflix has expanded its partnership with Sennheiser and has chosen to roll out our game-changing AMBEO 2-Channel Spatial Audio experience to more of its catalogue.”
In addition, the company has increased the number of devices that can download content for offline viewing from four to six.
It also seems that Netflix will soon crack down on password sharing.
A now-deleted support page on the US Netflix service seemed to suggest that the Extra Member service, in which extra users outside a primary households are charged extra, would soon be launched in the US.
The archived page says in order for multiple devices to use a single subscription, users must “connect to the Wi-Fi at your primary location, open the Netflix app or website, and watch something at least once every 31 days”
Netflix spokesperson Kumiko Hidaka wouldn’t confirm the news, pointing to the company’s statements in recent earnings that, “later in Q1, we expect to start rolling out paid sharing more broadly.”
Looks like the days of password sharing are limited.
