NBN Co Planning 5G Tests

NBN Co is considering the future use of 5G technology in its fixed-wireless sites, mostly in remote areas across Australia.

It operates more than 2500 such sites, enabling LTE fixed-wireless access for some 225,000 end users in difficult areas where the distance between premises can be many kilometres. Currently in these cases data travels from a transmission tower as far as 14 kilometres to an NBN outdoor antenna at the house.

NBN Co chief technology officer Ray Owen has said the company would “use these tests to find out more about the technology and how it can help us deliver better services to our fixed wireless end users across Australia.”

While he noted that 5G sshould enable faster speeds, he added: “At NBN we also know better than anyone about how much data end-users are consuming – and some of the challenges on putting that data capacity onto fixed wireless networks.”

NBN Co plans to begin running tests this week.
