Confidential Microsoft documents accidentally leaked during a US Court case has revealed a trove of Xbox secrets including new consoles, upcoming titles, and an idea to buy Nintendo.

Microsoft mistakenly provided confidential information about its video-game operations to a federal court website in the FTC’s Activision Blizzard antitrust case.

The judge in the case was notified that the exhibits included non-public information and said in an order Tuesday that they had been removed from the court site.

Several new pieces of information about Microsoft’s gaming plans were revealed, but the most notable was the notion of disc-less console.

Called Project Brooklin Microsoft has eliminated the boxy design of the original Xbox Series X, with the latest model having a circular, sleek look.

The documents reveal that it will come with 2TB of storage – double what is currently available – reduced PSU power by 15% and a USB-C front port with power delivery.

It will also come with the latest Wi-Fi 6E solution, alongside Bluetooth 5.2 support. Microsoft has also managed to shrink the die to just 6nm for “improved efficiency”.

The leak revealed several closely guarded secrets including the desire of Microsoft’s video-game chief, Phil Spencer, to acquire Nintendo.

Leaked communication documents revealed that back in 2020 Spencer claimed that he would really like to buy Nintendo someday.

In an email to two top Microsoft marketing executives, Spencer wrote that “Nintendo is THE prime asset for us in Gaming” and that “getting Nintendo would be a career moment and I honestly believe a good move for both companies.”

One executive, Takeshi Numoto, asked Spencer and Chris Capossela in an email titled “random thought” about why Microsoft isn’t finding acquisition targets like Nintendo a “more attractive” way to “increase our consumer exposure and relevance.”

(At the time, Microsoft was in discussions to acquire TikTok, and Numoto didn’t feel it would be the best match.

The accidental leak occurred on Sept. 14, when Microsoft provided the exhibits to the court for upload to the internet page established for the case, according to the judge’s order.

“The FTC was not responsible for uploading Microsoft’s plans for its games and consoles to the court website,” the agency’s director of public affairs wrote on X.

In June, confidential documents pertaining to Sony Group leaked as part of the FTC case.

The files described Sony’s revenue from Activision’s Call of Duty and game-development costs.

Shortly after the leak Xbox chief Phil Spencer emailed Microsoft employees about the massive Xbox leak.

In the internal memo, obtained by The Verge, Spencer says Microsoft’s Xbox plans “were unintentionally disclosed” as part of the FTC v. Microsoft case. Documents revealed a lot: a disc-less Series X redesign, a 2028 Xbox that could deliver “cloud hybrid games,” a new Xbox controller, unannounced Bethesda games, and even discussions about acquiring Nintendo.

Spencer hints that Microsoft’s plans may have changed, particularly as some documents were from last year, but others were from years prior. “I know this is disappointing, even if many of the documents are well over a year old and our plans have evolved,” says Spencer in his internal memo.
