Intel Invades Samsung Tab 3

Chip maker has landed a major deal with mobile giant Samsung to power 10.1″ Galaxy Tab 3, announced at Computex event in Taipei overnight.

Intel Atom Z2560 ‘Clover Trail+’ processor will power Samsung new 10.1″ Tab 3 – both 3G and 4G models

The new ‘Clover Trail+’  Atoms delivers higher performance, battery life for Android tablets, claim Intel.
Samsung Tab 3 will also feature Intel’s 3G/4G LTE solutions – Intel XMM 6262 3G modem/XMM 7160 LTE modem, the latter Intel says “is one of the world’s smallest and lowest-power multimode-multiband solutions” for global LTE roaming.

Energy efficiency was always the Achilles heel in Intel mobile chips.

The deal with Samsung signals Intel’s “continued momentum in the tablet market segment,” said the chip giant, who until now has failed to get a grip on the mobile market, outrun by dominating UK rival, AMD.

This is the first time Intel chips have powered Samsung tablets – the best selling of all Android tabs.
“Customers are selecting Intel technology because it offers the best balance of high performance, power efficiency and battery life,” said Hermann Eul, Intel vice president, Mobile and Communications Group.
“It’s ultimately about the consumer experience, and we are confident people will be pleased with what Intel Inside has to offer.”
However, ARM boss say the deal won’t affect its mobile domination “one iota,” Simon Segars told the Financial Times.

“Intel getting a socket in a Samsung tablet is not going to affect our business through this year one iota,” Simon Segars, ARM CEO, said.

At Taipei this week, ARM announced Cortex-A12 processor, with 40% more performance than its previous Cortex-A9.

Intel in Android Tablets
Intel says its dual-core Atom SoC (“Clover Trail+”) platform for Android tablets provides double the  performance and three times the graphics capabilities with “competitive” battery life compared to the previous Intel Atoms.
The new gen Atom processors are designed for a ‘lightning-fast applications experience, responsive Web browsing, stunning 3-D graphics, advanced camera capabilities and vivid HD video with energy efficiency for outstanding battery life.’

The integrated Intel Graphics Media Accelerator also provides realistic 3-D gaming experiences, 1080p HD video and crystal-clear graphics, supporting four simultaneous app threads for better multitasking.
said for a long time that with Intel’s strengths and their relationships with
some of these customers they’re probably going to get some sockets. Do we think
that’s going to be a meaningful impact on us? No we don’t,” ARM’s Chief

Intel share rose slightly to US$25.42 on the Nasdaq in after hours trading.
