Lenovo, HP & Dell Spearhead 5G Notebooks

Lenovo, HP and Dell are tipped to launch their first 5G notebooks late this year, with Apple rumoured to unveil a 5G Macbook in 2020.

According to Taiwanese trade publication, DigiTimes, the world’s first 5G notebooks will launch in the second half of 2019.

Supply chain sources claim Apple has finalised its ‘integrated 5G MacBook design’, with its 5G transceiver tipped to offer faster transmission rates than rivals – justifying a delayed launch.

The iPhone manufacturer is reportedly using a ceramic antenna board (six times the cost of a metal version), offering twice the reception efficiency and transmission rate.

The news comes after Apple received patent approvals for LTE connected MacBooks in 2016.

It follows Apple’s billion dollar acquisition of Intel’s smartphone modem business, including 5G components, which commentators claim will accelerate its future R&D efforts.
