As is tradition, Apple is expected to launch its latest model in September. It will give consumers the usual choices – a base model iPhone 17, as well as Plus, Pro and Pro Max options. There has also been speculation that Apple will release an extra-thin iPhone 17 Air later in the year, to take on Samsung’s Galaxy S25 Edge.

While Apple won’t launch a foldable phone this year, it’s rumoured that there just might be an ‘iPhone 18 Fold’ released come September, 2026. At the very least, Apple appears eager to up the quality of its (currently unfoldable) screens.

The Elec has reported that LG Display, which supplies the Tandem OLED for iPad Pros, has suggested Apple also start using the technology in its iPhones.

Given the manufacturing timelines, it’s unlikely Tandem OLED-equipped iPhones will come on the market until 2028. But Apple, facing rising competition, not least from the foldable phones now offered by Samsung and others, is reportedly now considering LG Display’s suggestion.

As the name suggests, Tandem OLED is an OLED screen with two emission layers on top of each other. This results in a phone that burns through less power while still emitting brighter light, when required, than OLED screens with only one emission layer.
