Beware – the much loved Internet is under threat, according to Mozilla, an organisation that helped make the Web near-ubiquitous. “The last five years really started to erode some of the things that made the Internet so great,” said executive director Mark Surman.
Threats range from consolidation into near-monopoly control by big companies to hostile governments and censorship, he said in a bid to raise awareness.
Mozilla launched a new Internet Health Report: a document that attempts to gauge the relative health of the Web on factors including security, censorship, openness and Web literacy.
A key concern is consolidation as a few major players – think Facebook, Google and Amazon – have monopolies or near-monopolies in their sectors.
