IFA 2017: Sony Takes On GoPro With New Compact Camera

Sony is looking to bring a new level of image quality and flexibility to the action camera market.

While the company has already released a range of action cameras in the past, the new RX0 features a form factor similar to a GoPro but with a much larger 1-inch sensor.

It features a ZEISS 24mm F4 fixed wide-angle lens with a shutter speed of up to 1/32000 of a second, and can shoot 15.3-megapixel stills at up to 16fps, Full HD video at 60fps and slow motion video at up to 1000fps.

For 4K video, an external recorder will need to be connected to take advantage of the camera’s clean HDMI output.

“Designed to facilitate creative photographic and videographic expression beyond current limitations, RX0 is equally adept at shooting still images, filming video or can be used as part of a multi-camera set-up to create an inspiring series of images, videos and super slow motion footage from a multitude of different perspectives,” Sony said.

Without a case, the RX0 is waterproof up to 10m, shockproof from drops of up to 2m and crushproof to 200kgf. The MPK-HSR1 Housing extends the camera’s waterproof protection to up to 100m.

This is one of many accessories launching alongside the camera, including the VCT-CGR1 Cage for connecting attachments and the VFA-305R1 Filter Adaptor Kit. The FA-WRC1M wireless radio commander can also be used to trigger up to 15 RX0 cameras at once.

The Sony RX0 will be available from early October.
