HMD Staying In OZ Smartphone Market Despite Lacklustre Sales
Brenden Folitarik, the general manager Australia & Oceania of HMD smartphones claims that the business is doing well in Australia despite only selling 20,000 units in Q1 2025.
His comments came after we revealed that the UK phone Company was exiting the US market.
“I can’t comment on the position of other markets, but you will find both Nokia and HMD phones widely available across Australian retailers and operators. Australians are showing a genuine connection to the Nokia brand, and the rise of digital detoxing has only added to the success of our feature phone business locally. Walk into any of the big four retailers and you’ll see a growing range of Nokia, and HMD feature phones as we continue to go from strength to strength in this space.”
Like Samsung HMD is reluctant to present sales numbers.

HMD Global launch event
According to IDC Australia data for Q1 2025 HMD sold 20,000 HMD and Nokia devices Vs 1.7M total devices sold.
This represents just 1.2% with Motorola Samsung and Oppo dominating in the Android OS market.
Folitarik said “The performance of HMD smartphones in the Australian market continues to meet, and in some cases exceed, our expectations since the brand’s introduction”.
“Our multi-brand strategy is showing growth across several segments. From introducing second generation devices focused on affordability, moving into postpaid for the first time locally with Vodafone and launching “fix-it-yourself” phones, it is an exciting time for HMD in Australia.
Another UK brand who last week launched a new premium smartphone and an expensive pair of headphones aimed at the 18-25 year old market is Nothing whose entry into the Australian market via an exclusive deal with JB Hi Fi saw the brand struggle to get traction with the business now looking to get traction with their new Nothing 3 smartphones.
