GTA 6 Physical Edition Drops The Disc In Digital-Only Retail Shift
Rockstar Games has confirmed that physical editions of Grand Theft Auto 6 will not include a game disc at launch, with boxed copies instead shipping with a digital download code.
The decision means customers buying the game from retailers will still receive a physical case, but will need to redeem a code through the PlayStation or Xbox digital storefronts before downloading the title.
GTA 6 launches on November 19, with pre-orders now live. In Australia, the Standard Edition is priced at $129.95, while the Ultimate Edition will cost $159.95.
The move has sparked criticism from players and some independent retailers overseas, who argue that a “physical” release without a disc undermines ownership, resale and preservation of games.
It also effectively removes trade-ins from the equation, as boxed code versions cannot be resold once redeemed. That gives Rockstar and platform holders more control over pricing, access and distribution.

The strategy is likely also aimed at preventing early leaks.
Major physical releases are typically shipped to retailers ahead of launch, creating the risk of copies reaching players before release day. For a game as closely watched as GTA 6, Rockstar is expected to be highly protective of story details and launch timing.
The shift comes as the broader console market continues moving toward digital distribution. Sony sells a disc-less PlayStation 5, Microsoft’s Xbox Series S is digital-only, and publishers have increasingly favoured downloads over discs.
Reports suggest Rockstar could release a disc-based version after launch, potentially in December, although the company has not issued a clear public confirmation.
