US audio brand Emotiva has launched its new XSP-2 Differential Reference Stereo Preamplifier, a two-channel separates product aimed at serious hi-fi buyers looking for modern digital connectivity without abandoning an analogue-first design.

The XSP-2 succeeds the company’s XSP-1, which launched in 2013, and adds a factory-installed ESS-based DAC module, HDMI ARC, USB-C, two coaxial inputs and two optical inputs.

Emotiva says the digital section is shielded from the analogue signal path, with the preamp built around a fully balanced, fully differential architecture designed to reduce noise and interference.

The unit also includes balanced bass management for 2.1 or 2.2-channel systems, with 40Hz, 60Hz, 80Hz and 100Hz crossover options, plus stereo or summed mono subwoofer output.

Vinyl users are covered with an onboard moving magnet and moving coil phono stage, while a dedicated headphone output is driven by a current-mode feedback amplifier.

Other features include an external processor loop, Home Theatre Bypass and fourth-generation sealed relays for audio switching.

The front panel has a large blue OLED display and menu controls for cartridge selection, balance, filters and subwoofer settings. A remote control is included.

Emotiva president Dan Laufman said the XSP-2 was designed as a successor to one of the company’s most popular products, adding that a future streaming module is already in development.

The XSP-2 includes two rear expansion slots, with the DAC module occupying one of them. Streaming is not built in at launch, meaning users will still need an external streamer or digital source for network playback.

The XSP-2 is a preamplifier only and must be paired with a power amplifier to drive speakers.

The Emotiva XSP-2 Differential Reference Stereo Preamplifier is available now through Emotiva for US$1,599, or around A$2,320 before shipping and taxes.
