The Canadian Government has gone one step further than Australia, with the Countries Industry Minister kicking Chinese security Company Hikvision’s operation out of the Country all together.

The Company is also the owner of Ezviz whose products were being sold by Officeworks before ChannelNews highlighted the risks associated with the brand, withtheWesfarmers owned retailer now moving to anotherquestionableChinese securitybrand.

In Australia the Federal Government ordered a ban on the Companies security cameras but not on the Chinese Company who have been described by the US government as high risk.

Canadian Industry Minister Melanie Joly said her government ordered Hikvision Canada to cease all operations in the country and close its business claiming that the existence of the business in Canada would be “injurious to Canada’s national security” after a review under the Investment Canada Act.

In Australia several Companies are still selling both Hikvision and Ezviz products including Security Wholesale, Amazon, Kogan and Security Australia.

As for Officeworks they have replaced the high risk Ezviz brand with TP Link products despite the potential that the US Government could ban the Company due to security concerns about its links to China.

The scope of the Canadian review doesn’t extend to Hikvision’s affiliate operations outside of Canada, Joly added.

The government will prohibit the purchase or use of Hikvision products in government departments, agencies and crown corporations.

A spokesperson for the Chinese embassy to Canada on Saturday hit out at the decision, saying it “seriously damaged” the legitimate rights and interest of Chinese companies and interfered with bilateral trade.

Beijing urges Canada to “stop politicising” economic and trade issues and stop the “unreasonable suppression” of Chinese business, according to a statement on social media.
