Google Home Goes Global, Will Beat Amazon To Oz

To cap off their I/O Conference this week, Google has announced a global roll-out for Google Home – previously only available in the US and a few other markets.

The company’s challenger to Amazon Echo and the Alexa voice assistant will be coming to Canada, Australia, France, Germany and Japan “this summer”.

They’re even throwing in a new Proactive assistant feature to make Google Assistant more involved, as well as hands-free phone calls and the ability to integrate with a myriad of content streaming services from Netflix to Spotify.

“The Assistant is becoming even more conversational, always available wherever you need it and ready to help get even more things done,” says Google Assistant VP of Engineering, Scott Huffman.

While Amazon’s expansion into the Australian market looks to be a sure thing, the company have remained quiet on when exactly local customers can expect to get their hands on the Alexa voice assistant experience that’s proved a winner on the company’s home turf.

If Google can export its smart home experience first, that could prove a costly mistake.
