CT Scans Face Apple Against Counterfeits
Lumafield, which is an industrial scanner manufacturer, has used its technology to show the difference between electronic devices and their cheaper counterparts.
Last week, it used its Neptune CT scanner to face off counterfeit Apple devices against the authentic ones. They tested the Apple 85W MagSafe 2 Power Adaptor and the AirPods Pro 2nd Generation.
Both power adaptors look similar on the surface, but the CT scan revealed that while the authentic adapter contains “sophisticated power management system that includes components for power conditioning and conversion,” the counterfeit has less complex circuitry. It also lacks grounding, and has a much simpler heat sink.

The CT scan revealed the Apple’s AirPods contain “meticulously-engineered button cell batteries in each earbud.”
The fakes house lithium-ion pouch cell batteries that are less safe. They also use off the shelf components in each bud, and have fewer microphones and less control circuitry.
This means sound quality takes a massive hit. One counterfeit pair didn’t even offer wireless charging, which makes them useless in a charging case.
