Government officials in China have spoken out about the “stupidity” of a number of US chain stores, who have reportedly pulled products sourced in the Xinjiang province.
Walmart and discount chain Sam’s Club are among the companies targets by the officials; both companies claim they are simply out of stock, a reason China calls a “self-deceptive excuse.”
This month, congress passed the Uyghur Forced Labor Prevention Act, which bans imports from Xinjiang, unless the companies can prove forced labour wasn’t used in the production of said items.
“To take down all products from a region without a valid reason hides an ulterior motive, reveals stupidity and short-sightedness, and will surely have its own bad consequences,” the Chinese Communist Party’s Central Commission for Discipline Inspection said.
