Apple Debut watchOS 7 with Sleep Tracking & Fitness App
Apple has refreshed its smartwatch portfolio with the debut of watchOS 7, offering a rebranded Fitness app and sleep tracking functionality. The update will not apply to the Apple Watch Series 1 and Series 2.
Launched at its Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) this week, the new sleep tracking feature has been hotly requested from consumers, and seeks to improve sleep in addition to monitoring.
The new ‘Wind Down’ feature works in conjunction with an iPhone, and aims to reduce phone and watch distractions closer to form healthier sleep routines.
Prompts for relaxation and meditation are also included, alongside a revamp of the alarm screen which offers better access to daily apps.
The Apple Watch will monitor a wearer’s micro-movements inclusive of breathing behaviours – displayed on both the phone or watch.
Users without an Apple Watch can still benefit from some of the sleep tracking features, with the update coming to iOS17 and watchOS 7 later this year
The news comes after Apple acquired smart sleep tracking company, Beddit, in 2017 with its devices attaching to a mattress.
watchOS 7 also includes ‘Fitness’ app, displacing the former Activity app. New features will include supporting cycling directions and tracking for dance workouts.
For the first time, watchOS 7 will offer developers the ability to offer more than one app on a single watchface, following a revamp of the device’s on-screen Watch widgets.
Users can also share watch faces with others, via a new ‘Face Sharing’ feature available via the Apple Watch app store or via social media sites.
Catering to the coronavirus pandemic, the watch will also offer a new hand-washing detection system, with a countdown guiding a user to wash as per health official recommendations.
The news comes as the global smartwatch market continues to facilitate robust demand, prompt by house-bound consumers desiring health and fitness maintenance following the COVID19 pandemic and gym lockdown measures.
