Apple is reportedly moving ahead with plans for a new version of its ultra-thin iPhone Air, with the next model currently expected to arrive in early 2027. Sources familiar with the project claim the handset is already undergoing extensive internal testing as the company looks to address some of the biggest criticisms levelled at the original device.

The upcoming smartphone, said to be operating under the internal codename V62, is expected to introduce a dual-camera setup on the rear. Unlike the existing model, which relies on a single lens, the revised version is believed to add an ultra-wide camera to provide greater photographic flexibility.

While the overall appearance is not expected to change significantly, Apple is reportedly exploring ways to extend battery performance. Given the extremely slim design of the Air range, increasing battery capacity may prove challenging, meaning efficiency improvements could play a major role in delivering longer usage times.

The iPhone Air debuted in September 2025 as part of Apple’s broader strategy to refresh its smartphone portfolio through new form factors. Since then, reports have indicated that the company is also preparing its first foldable iPhone and a special anniversary model featuring a curved display that extends around the sides of the device.

Current plans suggest the second-generation Air will launch approximately 18 months after the original. However, Apple has not publicly confirmed the device and details surrounding both its specifications and release timing could still change before launch.

The company is also said to be reorganising its traditional iPhone release strategy. Rather than unveiling every major model at the same September event, Apple is expected to split launches across multiple periods throughout the year.

Under the reported roadmap, premium devices such as the iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max and the company’s first foldable handset will arrive during the usual autumn launch window. The standard iPhone 18 and the updated iPhone Air are then expected to follow several months later.

The new Air model is believed to use a version of Apple’s A20 Pro chipset, bringing flagship-level processing capabilities to the slimmer device. Apple is reportedly focusing heavily on camera improvements and battery life, areas that have generated the most feedback from existing Air owners.

The current model, which launched at approximately A$1,530 based on direct currency conversion, stands out for its exceptionally thin construction. However, that design has required compromises in areas such as camera hardware and battery capacity, preventing it from matching the capabilities of Apple’s Pro range.

Despite those limitations, the Air continues to occupy a distinct position within Apple’s lineup. It appeals to buyers seeking a lightweight and stylish smartphone without the additional features or higher cost associated with Pro-branded devices.

Apple’s previous attempts to diversify the iPhone range through Mini and Plus variants delivered mixed results, with neither gaining widespread popularity. Although the Air has reportedly performed better than those earlier experiments, it has yet to become one of the company’s strongest-selling models.

A staggered release schedule could provide Apple with additional advantages beyond product differentiation. By spreading major launches throughout the year, the company may be able to generate more consistent revenue while maintaining visibility against competitors such as Samsung, which regularly introduces flagship smartphones at several points during the calendar year.
