Apple Lines Up Four Contenders to Succeed Tim Cook
Apple is planning for life after Tim Cook with four senior executives now seen as leading contenders to take the top job.
However, industry insiders warn the CEO’s departure is far from imminent.
Reports from The Wall Street Journal and Bloomberg name John Ternus, Apple’s hardware chief, as the frontrunner.

Ternus oversees the iPhone, Mac and AirPods and was instrumental in the shift to Apple-designed silicon in Macs, a move that boosted sales and performance.
Software boss Craig Federighi is also in contention.

Known for headlining Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference, Federighi has recently taken charge of the company’s rebooted AI strategy after early missteps triggered an internal shake-up. His portfolio spans software running on more than a billion devices worldwide.
Services head Eddy Cue remains a long-shot but influential candidate.

A company veteran since the late 1980s, Cue built Apple’s fast-growing services division, including iCloud, Apple TV+ and the App Store.
Rounding out the list is Greg “Joz” Joswiak, Apple’s long-serving marketing chief.
A 40-year veteran, Joswiak plays a central role in iPhone launches and was recently tasked with managing fallout from Apple’s delayed AI features.

The speculation follows a Financial Times report suggesting Apple’s board has stepped up succession planning, fuelling expectations Cook could step aside as early as next year.
However, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman pushed back this week, saying there are “few signs internally” of an imminent transition.
Cook, now 65, has led Apple since 2011, overseeing its rise from a US$350 billion valuation to more than US$4 trillion.
Apple doesn’t enforce a mandatory retirement age and analysts expect Cook to eventually shift into the chairman role rather than exit entirely.
Speaking in 2023, Cook confirmed the company has “very detailed” succession plans but stressed he expects to remain in the job “for a while,” adding he wants the next CEO to come from within.
