Amazon has announced the closure of its UK online book store Book Depository, which boasted worldwide free shipping.

As a result, share prices for Australian own online retailer Booktopia jumped by 6.82 per cent over night.

Book Depository will be closing on April 26, and has pledged to fulfil all orders taken up to that date, with support for order issues provided until June 23.

“From all of us at Book Depository we want to say “thank you”,” a brief statement reads.

“Delivering your favourite reads to you since 2007 has been a pleasure.”

The company was acquired by Amazon in 2011. As part of its global cost-cutting exercise, Amazon has moved away from book retailing, having announced it will “eliminate” all 68 of its physical bookstores across the US and UK.
