Australian mobile provider amaysim has introduced a new smartwatch connectivity feature that allows customers to use the same mobile number across both their smartphone and compatible LTE-enabled smartwatch without paying an additional monthly fee.

The feature, called Number Link, enables users to make and receive calls, send messages, stream music and access mobile services directly from their smartwatch, even when their phone is not nearby.

The move places amaysim among a small number of mobile virtual network operators (MVNOs) offering smartwatch connectivity, while also making connected smartwatches available through its online device store.

The launch comes at a time when wearable technology continues to gain popularity among Australian consumers. Connected smartwatches have become increasingly attractive for people exercising, travelling or looking to leave their phone behind while remaining reachable.

What sets the offering apart is the pricing. While several larger providers charge an additional monthly fee for smartwatch number sharing, amaysim is including the feature at no extra cost on its 28-day mobile plans starting from $40. Existing customers on eligible plans will automatically gain access to the service.

The company cited recent YouGov research suggesting many Australians are looking for ways to reduce household expenses. According to the survey, 30 per cent of Australians struggled to pay their mobile bill during the past year, while 41 per cent said they would consider switching providers to save money.

Vir Nath, Executive General Manager of Amaysim and Challenger, said the decision was driven by rising cost-of-living pressures.

“We know Australians are already juggling rising living costs, so introducing Number Link at no extra cost was an easy decision,” Nath said.

“It’s about giving our customers the freedom to stay connected on their terms, without hidden fees or complicated add-ons.”

Alongside the launch, amaysim has introduced limited-time discounts on selected mobile plans. Customers signing up to the $40 plan can access their first renewal for $15 and receive 120GB of data for their first three renewals before reverting to 80GB. The $50 plan is also being discounted to $18 for the first renewal and includes 160GB of data for the first three renewals before returning to 120GB.

The announcement highlights growing competition among Australian mobile providers as operators increasingly look beyond traditional smartphone plans to attract customers through additional services and connected device support.

With smartwatch adoption continuing to rise, number-sharing services are becoming an increasingly important feature for users who want greater flexibility without carrying multiple devices throughout the day.
