Digital Radio To Spread Wings

Digital Radio To Spread WingsDigital radio – which offers crackle-free reception –
is currently available only in mainland state capitals, and is accessed by an
estimated 25 percent of households in those areas.

Lack of suitable frequencies has prevented extension of the service outside
these cities.

The new Digital Radio Report recommends establishment of a digital radio
planning committee for regional Australia, to be chaired by the Australian
Communications and Media Authority.

Likely first regional areas to get the digital service are Canberra and Darwin,
where trials have been under way since 2010.
