Sinking iPad Sales See Lenovo Overtake Apple In Marketplace

While most other research groups count only desktops and notebooks as personal computers, Canalys also includes tablets in its market estimates. And, thanks to the once huge sales of its iPads, Apple has for quite some time been topping the market, as Canalys sees it.

Its latest report, for the three months to June, however shows that Lenovo shipped just short of 16 million PCs, down 5 percent, while Apple sales dropped 11.1 percent to 15.9 million.

“Apple and Lenovo lead the market in their home countries of the US and China respectively. But Apple is heavily reliant on worldwide iPad shipments, which totalled 10.9 million units this quarter,” said Canalys senior analyst Tim Couling.

He said iPads represented 70 percent of Apple’s total PC shipments in Q2, and shipments have been falling since peaking in Q4 2013.

HP, Dell and Samsung also saw their share of the market slip during the second quarter – in Samsung’s case, due to slowing tablet sales and the scaling back of its participation in the notebook market.
