Apple Admits Top End iPhone 6 Plus Has A Camera Problem
Apple has told owners that have encountered blurred images that they will replace the device.
The company has admitted that the camera units which have Sony sensors on certain models aren’t up to scratch due to a faulty component, Apple has not identified which part is faulty.
On the Apple web site Apple said “The affected units fall into a limited serial number range and were sold primarily between September 2014 and January 2015.”
It is not known whether the affected models with these serial numbers were sold in Australia.
Apple has set up a web-page that lets iPhone 6 Plus owners check to see if their device belongs to the affected batch.
All you need to do is enter your iPhone serial number into the page. You can find the number in the Settings > General > About section on your phone.
If it turns out that your phone is one of the affected models you have three options.
You can head over to an authorised service provider, an Apple retail store, or contact the company’s technical support.
Then your iPhone will “be examined” to verify that the handset is eligible, after which you’ll have the camera replace.
Our best guess for the faulty component would be the optical image stabilisation mechanism, which only features on the iPhone 6 Plus, not the iPhone 6. Apple has not confirmed the exact fault however, so we can’t say for sure.
Please note – Apple issues a warning to those with cracked screens looking to fix their cameras:
“If your iPhone 6 Plus has any damage such as a cracked screen which impairs the camera replacement, that issue will need to be resolved prior to service. In some cases, there may be a cost associated with the repair.”
Apple also says it “may restrict or limit repair” to the country you originally bought your iPhone from.
You’ll also only be able to get the camera fixed within the first three years of retail sale, so get moving folks.
