Universal Music Tells Streaming Platform To Block AI-Generated Music

The world’s largest record label has demanded that streaming platform such as Apple Music and Spotify move to block AI-generated music.

UMG has hit these AI-generated songs — which are created by scraping copyrighted music to develop fakes that sound like they were recorded by various popular artists — with a flurry of takedown notices and legal threats.

Now they have sent a letter to the streaming services demanding they take action.

“We will not hesitate to take steps to protect our rights and those of our artists,” UMG wrote to online platforms.

Much like ChatGPT, which is also trained on what is copyrighted IP, these AI-generated songs are using the works of popular artists to learn how to ‘compose’ music.

Universal controls a third of all recorded music, meaning they have by far the biggest stake in this game – and the biggest interest in defending its turf.
