Telcos Slam Wi-Fi Car Standard

Telecoms lobbying group GSMA is pressuring EU lawmakers to reject a European Commission push for a Wi-Fi-based standard for cars.
GSMA says the standard is an old technology that would not reduce road accidents.
The group says its 5G standard hooks up to both cars and devices in the surrounding environment.
It enables a wider range of applications such as entertainment, traffic data and navigation.
It also makes effective data speeds and signal failures less of an issue.
VW and Renault have backed the Wi-Fi based ITS-G5 system but Daimler, Ford, PSA Group, Qualcomm and Samsung endorse GSMA’s 5G standard.
