Star Wars Original Will Arrive in 2027
Disney owned Lucasfilm has confirmed that the original take of Star Wars where Han Solo shoots first will be released in 2027.
“On February 19, 2027, we’ll celebrate the 50th anniversary of Star Wars with a re-release of the 1977 original back for a limited time, in theatres everywhere,” Lucasfilm announced.
Controversy has raged for 50 years over a scene in Star Wars: A New Hope, where bounty hunter Greedo fires at Han Solo before he shoots back. By altering the scene, creator George Lucas changed Han Solo’s action into an act of self-defence, rather than that of a killer.
The 2027 take restores the original intention of Solo firing first. There has been variants of the scene with Greedo not firing a shot at all, to the two firing simultaneously. There were a series of other changes as well.
There is also a rumour that the 2027 release will be in 4K, which makes perfect sense given 4K too has been around a long time, with consumer 4K sets available for more than a decade.
