Spotify Tackles AI Music Surge With New ‘Verified’ Badge
Spotify has unveiled a new verification system aimed at helping listeners distinguish authentic artists from the growing wave of AI-generated music flooding streaming platforms.
The ‘Verified by Spotify’ badge, marked by a green checkmark, will begin appearing on artist profiles and in search results over the coming weeks.
The company says the feature is designed to signal that an artist has been reviewed and meets its standards for authenticity and trust.
The move comes as the music industry grapples with a sharp rise in AI content. Rival platform Deezer recently revealed that AI-generated tracks now account for nearly half of its daily uploads.
Major labels have pushed for the removal of thousands of AI songs mimicking real artists, while companies like Sony earlier this year unveiled tools to trace AI music back to original creators to enforce copyright and royalties.

To gain the badge, Spotify says artists must meet several criteria to receive verification, including sustained listener engagement, compliance with platform rules and evidence of a genuine presence beyond the platform, such as live performances, merchandise and active social media accounts. At launch, profiles primarily representing AI-generated artists will not be eligible.
The company claims more than 99% of artists that users actively search for will be verified from day one, spanning both major acts and independent musicians.
The new badge reflects broader industry concerns around trust and transparency as AI tools make it easier to generate and distribute music at scale. In recent years, streaming services have faced criticism over “fake” artists, impersonation and low-quality algorithmic content crowding out human creators.
Spotify has already introduced a range of features aimed at improving transparency, including expanded song credits and disclosures around AI use in music production. The verification badge builds on those efforts by offering a clearer signal at the artist level.
Alongside the badge, Spotify is also testing a new profile section displaying career milestones, release activity and touring history – providing what it likens to a “nutrition label” for artist credibility.
