Sony has signalled that a new set of premium wireless earbuds is about to be unveiled, teasing a launch event scheduled for February 12. The announcement points to the next generation of the company’s WF-1000X flagship line and arrives just weeks after Sony introduced the LinkBuds Clip.

The upcoming release is widely expected to be the WF-1000XM6, which would replace the WF-1000XM5 earbuds that debuted back in 2023. With more than a year having passed since the last flagship update, anticipation has been building among fans of Sony’s noise-cancelling audio gear.

Early details have already surfaced through a recent leak that offered a glimpse of the new design. The earbuds appear to have a broader shape than the previous model, along with an extra microphone grille that suggests further refinements to call quality and active noise cancellation. The charging case also looks to be slightly bulkier than the XM5 version.

While Sony has yet to confirm full specifications, the WF-1000XM6 is expected to carry an IPX4 rating for water resistance, making it suitable for workouts and light rain. Colour options are likely to include black and silver at launch.

Pricing has not been officially announced, but the new earbuds are tipped to land somewhere between A$300 and A$350, keeping them firmly in the premium segment of the true wireless market. With the launch now just days away, more concrete details are expected very soon.
