Sony has launched the ECM-AX10, a compact smartphone microphone designed to bring immersive spatial audio recording to vloggers, mobile filmmakers and content creators.

The new microphone is the first smartphone model to receive Eclipsa Audio certification, allowing users to capture spatial sound directly from their phones without the need for additional recording equipment.

At the centre of the ECM-AX10 are four built-in omnidirectional microphone capsules that capture audio from multiple directions. Sony’s spatial audio processing technology then recreates a sense of direction, distance and space, producing a more immersive listening experience.

The microphone is designed to work alongside Sony’s dedicated Spatial Audio Video Tool app, which allows creators to record videos, review footage, perform basic edits and export content with spatial audio directly from their smartphones.

This means users can complete the entire video production process on a single device, eliminating the need to transfer recordings to a computer for editing.

Sony has included three recording modes to accommodate different types of content creation.

Ambisonics mode captures spatial audio for immersive video production, including content intended for platforms such as YouTube. Binaural mode is designed to deliver a three-dimensional listening experience through headphones, even when Eclipsa Audio playback is not supported.

A conventional stereo recording mode is also available for everyday videos, social media content and other situations where spatial audio is not required.

Weighing approximately 24 grams, the ECM-AX10 is designed for portability and quick setup, making it suitable for creators filming on location or capturing spontaneous content.

The microphone connects directly to compatible smartphones through USB-C, removing the need for a separate audio recorder, additional cables or a complicated recording setup.

Sony is positioning the ECM-AX10 as a convenient solution for smartphone users looking to improve audio quality while adding more immersive sound to their videos.

The Sony ECM-AX10 is available in Australia for A$349.95.
