Sonos, which is still trying to recover from a disastrous app overhaul that damaged its reputation, alienated customers and ultimately cost its CEO his job, is preparing another major refresh of its software platform while also moving closer to launching a new premium wireless speaker.

According to industry sources, Sonos is set to roll out a significant update to its app this week, with the company focused on simplifying navigation and improving usability following the backlash that accompanied its controversial 2024 redesign.

The latest changes are understood to be part of a broader strategy to rebuild consumer confidence after one of the most turbulent periods in the company’s history. The previous app overhaul was plagued by bugs, missing features and performance issues that left many users unable to access parts of their music libraries or reliably control their Sonos systems. The problems triggered widespread criticism from loyal customers, generated thousands of complaints across social media and forums, and forced the company into months of damage control.

The fallout was severe. Former CEO Patrick Spence eventually departed the company after the failed software rollout overshadowed the launch of Sonos Ace, the company’s first wireless headphones. While the Ace received generally positive reviews for sound quality, Sonos has struggled to gain meaningful traction in the highly competitive premium headphone market dominated by Apple, Sony and Bose.

Now, under CEO Tom Conrad, Sonos is attempting to turn the page. Writing on Reddit, Conrad described the upcoming changes as “not a new app, but a new way of navigating Sonos inside the app you already have,” suggesting the company is focused on refining the existing platform rather than introducing another wholesale redesign.

At the same time, evidence is mounting that Sonos is preparing a new wireless speaker. Documents filed with the US Federal Communications Commission (FCC) in December 2025 indicate that a successor to the company’s current Era range is under development.

The strongest indication comes from FCC filings identifying a new Sonos device under model number S58/RM058. The filing was submitted on December 3, 2025, and approved on December 19, 2025.

Several documents associated with the filing, including external photographs and a user guide, are scheduled for public release this week, potentially revealing further details about the product.

Industry insiders believe the device will be marketed as the Sonos Era 500, positioning it above the existing Era 300 speaker and potentially introducing new audio capabilities designed to strengthen Sonos’ position in the premium wireless audio market.

While Sonos has yet to announce a launch date, sources suggest the speaker is being targeted for release in the final quarter of 2026.

The timing of the app refresh and the emergence of a new speaker filing suggest that Sonos is seeking to ensure its software platform is stable and user-friendly before introducing another major hardware product.

For a company still recovering from one of the most damaging product launches in its history, the success of both initiatives could prove critical to restoring consumer trust and reigniting growth.
