Italian appliance manufacturer Smeg has unveiled a major shift in design and product strategy at EuroCucina 2026, signalling a move away from concealed kitchen technology toward appliances that are deliberately visible, tactile, and central to modern kitchen spaces.

The biennial trade event, running from April 21 to April 26 in Milan, has drawn retailers, designers, and suppliers from around the world, including a strong contingent from Australia. Within this global showcase, Smeg has taken a prominent position, occupying a 900 square metre stand at Pavilion 4 as part of FTK, Technology For the Kitchen, where it is presenting a redefined vision built around design visibility and material engagement.

At the core of the company’s 2026 strategy are three key pillars, Musa, Isola, and a series of high profile collaborations. Together, these initiatives reflect a broader repositioning of the brand, placing equal emphasis on technological performance and physical interaction, rather than hiding appliances within cabinetry.

Central to the launch is the Musa Collection, developed in partnership with Studio Borromeo DeSilva. The range includes ovens, induction hobs, and extractor hoods, unified by what the company describes as rigorous design principles. The appliances feature rounded graphic elements and screen printed detailing, marking a departure from retro inspired styling toward a more architectural and contemporary aesthetic. Industry observers note that the collection aligns with a wider trend in European kitchen design that favours structured minimalism combined with refined surface detailing.

In contrast, the Isola Collection, created in collaboration with Stefano Boeri Interiors, actively challenges the long standing industry movement toward hidden appliances. The collection, which has already received recognition through a 2026 iF Design Award, positions the hob and hood as focal points rather than elements to be concealed. Using illuminated rail systems, the design transforms functional components into sculptural features within the kitchen, reinforcing the idea of appliances as centrepieces rather than background utilities.

Smeg has also expanded its existing Portofino range with the introduction of new matte finishes, responding to a broader shift away from high gloss surfaces. The update reflects growing consumer and designer interest in materials that emphasise texture and tactility, sometimes referred to within the industry as sensory design. This approach prioritises how surfaces feel in addition to how they appear, signalling a more holistic understanding of user interaction in domestic environments.

Among the most high profile announcements at the Milan showcase is Smeg’s continued collaboration with Porsche. The partnership has produced a new line of small domestic appliances, including kettles and toasters, inspired by automotive engineering and performance aesthetics. Featuring finishes such as Carrara White, the collection is positioned at the intersection of precision manufacturing and lifestyle design, highlighting the growing crossover between automotive branding and home appliances.

Colour strategy has also played a significant role in the company’s presentation. In collaboration with Pantone, Smeg has introduced “Cloud Dancer,” designated as the Pantone Colour of the Year. The shade, described as a soft off white with an emphasis on lightness and subtlety, is intended to evoke a sense of contemporary calm and timelessness within interior spaces. The colour is also expected to extend beyond kitchen appliances, with consumer electronics brand Motorola preparing to release a smartphone in the same tone, underscoring a growing alignment of colour trends across product categories.

In addition to visible design changes, Smeg is emphasising the integration of advanced smart technology within its product range. Rather than foregrounding digital interfaces, the company is embedding what it describes as “invisible” smart functions into appliances that maintain a strong visual identity. This approach reflects a wider industry effort to balance connectivity and automation with aesthetic considerations.

Further reinforcing its design evolution, Smeg has updated its iconic FAB refrigerator line with a new finish known as Moonlight. The colour introduces a luminous, natural tone aimed at complementing contemporary interior palettes while maintaining the recognisable form of the retro inspired range.

Visitors to EuroCucina can view Smeg’s full exhibition at Pavilion 4, Stand D03 to D07 at Fiera Milano Rho. Beyond the main exhibition space, the company is also participating in Milan’s Fuorisalone program, hosting an installation titled “New Visions of Living and Design” at its flagship store on Via della Moscova. The showcase includes public events and evening activations scheduled for April 24 and 25, further extending the brand’s presence across the city during one of the design industry’s most significant annual gatherings.
