Samsung is preparing for its next wave of smartphones, launching the security-focused Galaxy Quantum 7 in South Korea as new leaks provide an early look at what could be a major redesign for the upcoming Galaxy S27 Ultra.

The Galaxy Quantum 7 has officially arrived through South Korean carrier SK Telecom, combining mid-range hardware with enhanced security and a selection of Samsung’s AI-powered features. The handset is effectively a carrier-specific version of the Galaxy A57 5G and is unlikely to receive a wider international release.

It features a 6.7-inch Full HD+ Super AMOLED Plus display with a 120Hz refresh rate, while Samsung’s Exynos 1680 processor is paired with 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage.

A 5,000mAh battery is claimed to provide up to two days of use, with fast charging also supported.

Photography is handled by a 50-megapixel main camera with optical image stabilisation, joined by a 12-megapixel ultra-wide and 5-megapixel macro camera. A 12-megapixel front camera supports Super HDR, while Samsung has also focused on improving low-light image processing.

The Quantum 7 includes a range of AI features through Samsung’s Awesome Intelligence suite, including Circle to Search, AI Eraser, Best Face and Edit Suggestions. Knox Vault security and IP68 water and dust resistance are also included.

Samsung is promising up to six Android operating system upgrades and six years of security updates, extending the usable life of the handset well beyond the typical support period traditionally offered by mid-range smartphones.

The Galaxy Quantum 7 is priced at KRW 717,200 in South Korea, equivalent to approximately A$740 at current exchange rates. It is available in Awesome Gray, Awesome Ice Blue and Awesome Lilac, although the Lilac model is exclusive to SK Telecom’s T Direct Shop.

While the Quantum 7 is now official, attention is already turning to Samsung’s next flagship generation. Newly leaked CAD renders suggest the Galaxy S27 Ultra could receive one of the most significant rear-design changes seen on an Ultra model in several years.

Rather than Samsung’s familiar arrangement of individual camera rings, the renders show a raised camera platform housing the rear cameras. The change would give the S27 Ultra a noticeably different appearance from its predecessor and bring its camera treatment closer to designs used by several rival flagship smartphones.

The leaked handset measures approximately 163.7 x 78.2 x 8mm, increasing to around 12.53mm around the camera housing. Despite the exterior changes, Samsung is reportedly retaining the integrated S Pen slot.

More significant changes could be happening inside the camera system. Samsung is rumoured to be dropping the dedicated 3x telephoto camera, potentially reducing the number of rear cameras.

Instead, a new 200-megapixel main camera, reportedly based on an ISOCELL HP6 sensor, could handle part of the 3x to 5x zoom range. The existing 5x periscope telephoto camera is expected to remain.

A larger 5,700mAh battery is also reportedly being considered, compared with the 5,000mAh capacity traditionally used by recent Galaxy Ultra flagships.

The Galaxy S27 Ultra is also expected to use Qualcomm’s next-generation Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 processor in many markets, while Samsung’s Exynos 2700 could appear in selected regions and other models within the Galaxy S27 family.

Pricing and final specifications have not been confirmed by Samsung, meaning the Galaxy S27 Ultra details remain unverified ahead of its official launch. The renders nevertheless suggest Samsung may be preparing to make more substantial changes to its flagship design rather than simply refining the formula used by recent Ultra models.
