The move is aimed at improving how connected devices from different brands work together, particularly those using Matter-over-Thread technology such as lighting, air quality monitors, remote controls and smart plugs.

For IKEA users, the update is designed to make everyday control more intuitive. Devices can be managed through voice assistants or automated routines, allowing users to switch lights on or off or trigger other actions with minimal effort. Samsung says the goal is to make these products easier to incorporate into daily routines while unlocking more advanced automation capabilities through SmartThings.

To achieve this, Samsung has refined how its platform communicates with IKEA devices. The company says it carried out several rounds of testing to strengthen connection reliability and developed a tailored user experience within the SmartThings app. This approach is intended to deliver a smoother setup process, reducing friction and creating a more straightforward plug-and-play style experience.

However, the development also highlights ongoing challenges with Matter, the industry standard that is meant to simplify smart home integration. In theory, Matter should allow devices from different manufacturers to connect easily without requiring extensive platform-specific adjustments. In practice, some IKEA users have encountered difficulties when attempting to connect Matter-enabled products to their home networks, suggesting that the technology is still maturing.

Samsung has continued to evolve SmartThings in recent months, adding new features and expanding compatibility. One of the latest updates includes support for Siri voice commands, further broadening how users can interact with their connected devices.
