Tablets Proving Popular In Restaurants
As part of a wider international effort dubbed Our Mobile Planet, Google partner Ipsos MediaCT interviewed a claimed 1000 Australian adults who identified themselves as using a smartphone to access the Internet.
It found 98 percent use their smartphones at home, 68 percent in a shop, 61 percent in restaurants, 61 percent at an airport, the same on public transport, and 48 percent in the doctor’s rooms.
Another 48 percent say they use the smartphone while watching TV. (Not researched, but alarmingly obvious to CDN: the number who tap out messages on their smartphones while walking city streets or – still more alarmingly – while crossing a busy road).
Some 58 percent of the population say they use their smartphone every day to access the Net, and 74 percent say they never leave home without it.
Around 86 look for local information on their phone and 88 percent take action as a result, such as making a purchase or contacting the business. About 28 percent expect to make more mobile purchases in the future.
But not everyone is totally enthusiastic about mobile commerce. Around 68 percent of respondents said they would prefer to use a PC or laptop for “these services”.
Another 36 percent said m-commerce doesn’t seem secure; and 11 percent found e-payments too complicated.
