Roblox, an online game platform, will now be accessible on Sony’s PlayStation, PlayStation 4, and PS5. A complete release is also currently available in beta form on Meta’s VR platform Quest.
The popular gaming platform also said they are releasing an interaction tool called Roblox Connect, a new way to create characters with their body language, real-life names, and facial expressions.
Roblox has previously only been available on PCs, mobile devices, and Microsoft’s Xbox One console, but the news will be welcome to its some 60 million players around the world.
Clearly, the gaming company is attempting to capture more market share, but has Roblox there has been controversy surrounding its content.
Despite the game being known for letting its players unleash their creativity, it also has come under fire due to what some have said is a poor moderation of its content, which is concerning because it is popular with children.
Regardless of concerns, Roblox has maintained its popularity and told Bloomberg that roughly two-thirds of all U.S. children from ages nine to 12 play the game, and the game holds players fascination because it allows players to create their own games within it. Roblox even calls players developers.
According to Roblox and building on their popularity, the new Meta Quest version of their game has an open beta version that has been widely popular, with over one million downloads in its first five days.
Further details have also emerged about Connect, like the new tool will use a camera at a player’s face (must be aged 13 and older). Roblox can take their expressions and add them to their in-game character.
Consent by the players must first be given, and according to Roblox, they said the information is not stored for the company’s use, stating that “video from your camera never leaves your device”.
Roblox Connect will launch soon, but dates and other details have yet to be announced.
