It doesn’t actually have an electric car available to sell in Australia, but Porsche says it is planning to set up a supercharger network across the nation that will be six times faster than Tesla’s.
Chief executive Oliver Blume told Australian IT that Australia’s long distances meant a network of recharging stations was essential for the take-up of electric vehicles.
“We need charging infrastructure not only in the homes of our Porsche fans, but also public ones,” he said. “For example, when you want to go from Sydney to Melbourne for the main roads you need some sections with a charging opportunity – the same idea we have in Europe.”
Electric vehicle pioneer Tesla already has a charger network in Australia in 22 locations.
Blume claims that Porsche’s chargers would be much faster. He said Porsche’s planned Mission E electric car would be able to recharge for a 400km range in just 15 minutes whereas a Tesla would need 90 minutes.
