PC Shipments Down Again: Lenovo No. 1, Apple Tumbles

PC shipments have suffered their seventh consecutive quarter of decline, however the market is showing some signs of improvement, according to preliminary results from Gartner.

Worldwide shipments totalled 64.3 million units in the 2016 second quarter, down 5.2 percent year-on-year, according to Gartner.

Meanwhile, the International Data Corporation (IDC) has found that shipments totalled 62.4 million units for the quarter, down 4.5 per cent year-on-year, beating a forecast 7.4 per cent decline.

Gartner had recorded a 9.6 per cent decline on 64.8 million units in this year’s first quarter.

“One of the ongoing problems in the PC market has been the price hike in selected regions due to the weakening local currency against the US dollar,” Mikako Kitagawa, Gartner principal analyst, commented.

“The price issue has impacted the EMEA and Latin America regions for the past year. However, PC shipment declines became rather modest in the second quarter compared with previous quarters, which suggests a fading currency impact.”

Kitagawa noted that all regions except North America had experienced a shipment decline.

Meanwhile, Brexit did not have an impact on worldwide PC results in the quarter, however Gartner analysts believe it “could potentially create uncertainty, not only in currency, but also the entire economy beyond Europe”.

The IDC noted that improvement in channel inventories, an easier year-on-year comparison and an easing of component supply appear to have contributed to the stronger results.

“Unfortunately, these types of supply-side drivers don’t necessarily reflect a change in consumer purchases,” the IDC stated. “Even PC channels remain fairly cautious following challenges over the past year, so the results are not likely to raise the forecast.”

Loren Loverde, IDC Worldwide PC Trackers & Forecasting vice president, noted that the market “continues to struggle” amid the “wait for replacements to accelerate, along with some return of spending from phones, tablets and other IT”.

“However, the strong results in the US offer a glimpse of what the market could look like with pockets of growth and a stronger overall environment,” Loverde commented. “It’s not dramatic growth, but it could push the market into positive territory slightly ahead of our forecast for 2018.”

Gartner figures show that, while recording a 2.2 per cent decline year-on-year (its fifth consecutive quarter of global shipment declines), Lenovo maintained its number one position. Also notable is a 4.9 per cent year-on-year decline recorded by Apple.
