Nokia, Qualcomm Shake Down Automakers For Patent Fees

A group of 48 technology companies, including Nokia and Qualcomm, have hit Toyota, Honda and Nissan with a bill for their use of patented components vital in the connection of vehicles to 4G.

The firms have demanded a payment of $15 per vehicle to cover these patent fees.

It is unclear whether or not the car company will play ball, although lengthy court proceedings would not be on the top of anyone’s list at the moment.

With 4G technology playing a vital part in modern vehicles, it would be wiser to pay the fee, although with Toyota selling 10.5 million vehicles globally during 2021 alone, these fees are substantial.
