Nintendo Defies Industry Turmoil By Sticking To Its Own Playbook
The video game industry is facing a difficult stretch, with rising console costs, studio closures and widespread layoffs reshaping the landscape. Live-service titles continue to struggle, major platforms are navigating uncertain transitions and the growing influence of AI has added further unease. Amid all this disruption, one company has managed to remain relatively steady by refusing to follow the same path as its competitors.
Nintendo has quietly maintained momentum, particularly during the first year of the Switch 2. Over recent weeks, it has delivered a steady stream of releases and updates, including the launch of the Pokémon spin-off Pokopia, which reportedly surpassed two million copies sold within just four days. Updates for titles such as Super Mario Bros. Wonder and Mario Kart World have also helped keep engagement high. Alongside its gaming output, the company is continuing to expand into broader entertainment, with The Super Mario Galaxy Movie arriving as a follow-up to its previous billion-dollar success.

Elsewhere in the industry, the picture looks far less stable. Epic Games has cut more than 1,000 jobs as growth around Fortnite slows. Sony has increased the cost of PlayStation hardware in response to rising expenses, while Microsoft’s gaming division is undergoing leadership changes and internal restructuring. Electronic Arts has also reduced its workforce, even affecting teams behind high-profile titles. At the same time, ongoing supply issues such as the memory shortage are creating uncertainty for hardware development across the sector.
Nintendo has not been completely shielded from these pressures. The Switch 2 debuted during a period of global economic tension, coinciding with new tariff announcements that disrupted preorders and pushed up accessory costs. The company has since adjusted pricing on older hardware and is moving towards higher prices for physical games. It has even taken legal action against the US government over tariff impacts. Despite these challenges, Nintendo has largely avoided the more severe instability seen elsewhere.
A key difference lies in its approach. While many companies have pursued live-service models in search of recurring revenue, often with mixed or poor results, Nintendo has continued to focus on traditional game development. Its biggest recent titles, including Mario Kart World, Donkey Kong Bananza and Pokémon Legends Z-A, build on well-established franchises that have consistently driven hardware sales. Online features exist within its ecosystem, but they are not the centre of its strategy.
Consistency has become a defining trait. Nintendo has leaned on familiar formulas while still allowing room for occasional experimentation, reducing the likelihood of major failures. This cautious mindset extends to the Switch 2 itself, which builds on the success of its predecessor rather than attempting a radical redesign. The same philosophy can be seen in its film projects, which revisit established characters and stories.
Although the company’s current run has been stable, challenges remain. The Switch 2 is one of the few major consoles yet to see a price increase, though that may not last. Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa recently acknowledged that sustained rises in component costs could eventually affect profitability. Any future price adjustments could complicate efforts to maintain strong hardware sales.
Looking ahead, Nintendo still has significant releases in reserve. A new mainline Super Mario or The Legend of Zelda title has yet to be announced for the Switch 2, while the next core Pokémon games are still some distance away. Even so, the company appears in no rush to accelerate its plans. Its leadership has indicated that reacting too strongly to short-term market shifts is not the right strategy.
