New Samsung 10nm SoC Slated For The Galaxy S8?

Samsung has today advised that it has commenced mass production of system-on-chip (SoC) products with 10nm FinFET technology.

It could be that the SoC will be used in the Galaxy S8 smartphone, with Samsung stating that “SoCs with 10nm process technology will be used in digital devices launching early next year”, adding that it expects the SoCs will become more widely available throughout the year.

Samsung states that, when compared to its 14nm predecessor, the new 10nm process employs “an advanced 3D transistor structure with additional enhancements in both process technology and design enablement”, allowing up to a 30 per cent increase in area efficiency with 27 per cent higher performance, or 40 per cent lower power consumption.

“The industry’s first mass production of 10nm FinFET technology demonstrates our leadership in advanced process technology,” Jong Shik Yoon, Samsung executive vice president, head of foundry business, commented.

“We will continue our efforts to innovate scaling technologies and provide differentiated total solutions to our customers.”

Following the introduction of the first generation 10nm process, Samsung is targeting the 2017 second half for mass production of its second generation process.
