It was supposed to be Sony’s answer to Microsoft’s Xbox Pass but despite a big revamp the Japanese Companies PlayStation Plus offering is fast losing subscribers.

New data released last night by Sony reveal that the Companies revamped three tiered PlayStation Plus offering which includes hundreds of games and a host of retro classics from the PlayStation catalogue reveals that millions of subscribers have chosen to give the service a miss with many turning to PC gaming.

The data reveals that Sony dropped two million – from 47.3 million to 45.4 million – during the past three months that concluded at the end of September, also missing targets is sales of the Companies new PS5 gaming console.

Rolled out globally at the end of May, there has been plenty of online criticism in forums about the initial offering, with complaints about retro titles attracting a lot of attention.

This was the big Sony PlayStation play at trying to take on Microsoft’s Xbox Game Pass which is now available on new top end Samsung TV’s.

In what was seen as a desperate spin to save face Sony’s chief bean counter Hiroki Totoki claimed the decline was as a result of people spending more time outdoors than playing console games, there was no mention of poor console sales during the last quarter.

He also blamed the decline in the number third-party games and PS4 sales.

The service is punting on Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 and God of War Ragnarok to pump life back into the service.

He said: “There have been a declining number of members of PlayStation Plus. However, in the second quarter we renewed our services and there hasn’t been a great momentum as a whole. Also, we didn’t make aggressive promotions during the second quarter”.

“Therefore, in the future we are going to have more penetration on PS5, and we are going to have very good titles. In addition, we are able to make better promotions and we think we are able to recover.”
