Oppo’s next flagship smartphone could introduce a new approach to front-facing photography, according to fresh reports suggesting the company is testing a 100-megapixel selfie camera for its upcoming Find X10 series.

The leaked specifications point to a custom Samsung sensor measuring approximately 1/2.5 inches. While the resolution alone would place it among the highest-resolution front cameras seen on a smartphone, the more significant development may be its square sensor design.

Unlike traditional selfie cameras, which are optimised for portrait-oriented images, a square sensor captures a larger area of the scene. This gives users greater flexibility when switching between vertical and horizontal content, as the image can be cropped in different ways without sacrificing as much of the original frame.

The concept gained attention following Apple’s adoption of a similar format, but Oppo’s reported implementation would pair the design with a substantially higher pixel count. In theory, this could allow for sharper crops, improved digital zoom capabilities and more detailed group selfies, video calls and social media content.

The same leak also suggests the Find X10 range could be powered by MediaTek’s forthcoming 2nm Dimensity 9600 processor. While the details remain unconfirmed, the rumoured camera system indicates manufacturers are increasingly exploring new sensor formats rather than relying solely on higher megapixel numbers to improve smartphone photography.
