Google is working on a new feature for Chrome on Windows 11, named Performance Panel, which is expected to allow users to track the browser’s memory and CPU usage, along with the performance of individual tabs.

Lately, the company has been working on several performance-related changes for Chrome, including new tab discard controls. The Performance Panel will most likely be part of a broader strategy set to highlight efficiency, security, and speed of Chrome.

A Google engineer has noted the final design stages are underway, and the team is “working on finalising the design for the contents of the new performance side panel and need to prototype how the different performance cards will be displayed. To simplify prototyping, we are checking in the scaffolding for a blank side panel.”

Rumours are circulating suggesting the Performance Panel is similar to the browser essentials feature of Microsoft Edge. One key feature is likely to be Memory Saver. When this is enabled, it will prioritise resources towards active tabs. This means memory will only be used when it’s actively used.

This new feature could also include a battery efficiency feature, and when the percentage level drops to 20%, Chrome would proactively prompt the user to activate battery saving mode.

All of these features are part of Edge’s browser essentials, and with Performance Panel, Chrome users will be able to have more control over how their browser uses resources, improving performance, battery life, and overall experience.
