Nest Unveils Video Doorbell & Security System

Alphabet-owned automation company Nest has expanded its products for the “thoughtful home” to include a new video doorbell and a range of security solutions.

After the company launched its indoor and outdoor security cameras and smoke detector in Australia through iSelect in July, Nest’s latest range of products primarily focus on home security.

These include the Nest Secure alarm system, sold as a starter pack that includes the Nest Guard base hub, the Nest Detect sensor for detecting movement when attached to doors or windows or motion when attached to a wall, and the Nest Tag for arming and disarming the system using NFC.

“Today, Nest is delivering on the next phase of our strategy to create the thoughtful home,” said Nest CEO Marwan Fawaz.

“We’ve had quite a year so far, expanding into 11 more countries, growing our product portfolio with the successful launches of Nest Cam IQ indoor and the Nest Thermostat E, and today we’re disrupting yet another product industry: home security. By building product experiences our customers love, Nest has experienced more than 60% growth on devices shipped in recent years and continues to expand to millions of homes around the world,” Fawaz said.

Along with the Nest Secure system, the company also introduced the Nest Hello video doorbell. It is able to use facial recognition to detect familiar or unfamiliar faces, and send an alert and photo when a person has been detected.

The Nest Hello also features HD Talk and Listen, echo suppression and ambient noise cancellation to allow owners to talk and listen to people at their door.

Finally, the Nest Cam IQ outdoor adapts the company’s existing Nest Cam IQ indoor for the outdoors with IP 66 certification against dust and water. The camera records at 1080p resolution, and is able to use facial recognition to detect familiar and unfamiliar faces.

Nest also said it would be adding Google Assistant support to the Nest Cam IQ indoor later in the year.

Nest has not confirmed the release of its new products in Australia, but Nest Secure and Nest Cam IQ outdoor will be available in US from November, and the Nest Hello in Q1 2018.
